The narrative begins with a unique twist: it was the designer, Jack Simpson, who stumbled upon this hidden gem for his clients. With a keen eye for potential, Simpson recognized the property's untapped possibilities, especially its walled garden, a rare find in the city. The couple, accustomed to the relaxed pace of country life, sought a London home that would connect them to nature, and Simpson's discovery seemed to fit the bill perfectly.
Unlocking Potential
The exterior of the Chelsea duplex exudes charm with its well-preserved brick facade and original iron fence. But it was the interior that held the most promise. At 2,000 square feet, the apartment offered ample space for creativity, especially on the lower ground floor with its light well. Simpson and his team set out to infuse warmth and character into what felt like a dated space, aiming to create a seamless connection between the couple's country home and their new city retreat.
A Transformative Intervention
One of the key interventions was the removal of the staircase wall, an act that opened up the ground floor, creating a sense of arrival and enhancing the visual connection between the interior spaces. This simple yet impactful change led to the creation of a charming vestibule, dubbed the 'morning room', which overlooks the garden, bringing the outdoors in. The lower ground floor living room, adorned with antique finds and customized pieces, further contributes to the serene atmosphere.
A Country Garden in the City
The walled garden, a Grade I listed treasure, was landscaped to be low-maintenance yet visually appealing. Simpson collaborated with landscape experts to create a miniature country garden, complete with evergreens, perennials, and a wild vine. Inside, a nature-inspired palette, including honed marble and earthy paint finishes, further strengthened the connection to the outdoors.
A Robust and Elevated Space
The open-plan kitchen is a testament to Simpson's vision. Shaker-style cabinetry, antique brass hardware, and a sculpture-like Calacatta Viola marble island come together to create a contemporary farmhouse vibe. This space, in particular, reflects the designer's intention to create a robust and usable environment, while still maintaining an elevated aesthetic, catering to the clients' country-at-heart sensibilities.

After a seven-month renovation, the duplex house in Chelsea emerged as a true sanctuary.
